Pain Free Pups – How CBD Oil For Dog Arthritis Could Mean Better Quality of Life

Just like us (humans) our dogs can develop arthritis in their joints. The numbers are about 1 in 5 dogs develop arthritis as they age.
While most vets will recommend either steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or possibly do nothing, there is a growing popular trend to give dogs suffering from arthritis CBD oil to reduce inflammation and pain.
As I have discovered with our dog Sophie, the unique properties of CBD oil for dogs have not been widely studied, but the anecdotal evidence and successes (such as myself) are having with this compound from the cannabis plant are fantastic.

How does CBD Oil Work for Arthritis
Dog’s and humans have what is called an endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is closely tied to your dog’s immune system, feeling of pain and even mood and appetite. Giving your dog CBD oil effectively helps your dog’s endocannabinoid system work more effectively.
There have been studies published on the involvement of the human endocannabinoid system in osteoarthritis pain. It makes sense that as our dogs have this same type of system in their body, CBD oil, which interacts with the ECS system, can reduce the pain your dog experiences from arthritis.
CBD oil for arthritis in dogs is not a “cure” for their arthritis, as there is no cure for the condition in dogs or humans. However, just as glucosamine is given to dogs to help with joint health CBD oil can be used to relieve pain that occurs when arthritis has reached a point where it hinders your dogs quality of life.

Supporting Studies of Arthritis Treatment with CBD Oil
Over the past few years, there have been quite a few studies done, specifically in animals, to help prove the effectiveness CBD oil provides for arthritis sufferers.
A 2011 study researched the role that the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system play in joint inflammation. The results of this study were a success leading to the conclusion that the ECS does play a role in joint inflammation.
In 2014, another study concluded positive results were achieved in the use of CBD as a therapeutic treatment for osteoarthritis.
In 2016 a study was conducted on the effects of topical application of CBD to the joints and it effects on reducing inflammation. Again the results were positive.
All in all each new study tends to conclude the positive effects that CBD oil and other CBD type products have on the treatment of arthritis.

How Much CBD Oil Do I Give My Dog?
The amount of CBD oil you give your dog will vary based on the severity of their condition, their size and their responsiveness to the oil. It’s always best to start with a low dose and work up from there.
While there are few ill side effects of CBD oil in dogs, it’s important to keep a close eye on your dog after you begin supplementing them with CBD oil.
I’ve written an entire article on CBD oil dosage for dogs here you can review.
If you choose to give your dog CBD treats or capsules it can be more challenging to limit the amount of CBD they take (of course you can break a treat in half). For this reason, I prefer to use CBD oil tinctures for dogs.

What Type Of Pet CBD Product Is Best For Arthritis?
The three most popular forms of CBD oil products for dogs are treats, tinctures, and capsules. We give our dog Sophie a CBD oil tincture. There are three main reasons we decided to go with a tincture.
It’s easy to find tinctures that are human grade CBD oil
It’s easy to modify and limit dosage amounts with a tincture
It’s easier to squirt a few drops of CBD oil in your dog’s mouth then give a capsule or a treat they may not like
I would suggest trying either CBD treats or an oil tincture for dogs with arthritis.
